Highway Prequalification
Contractors must submit experience history applicable to the type of work on which they are bidding. Contract limits are set by bonding. The average processing time for applications is one week and the prequalification is good for one year. The annual fee is $100.
Contractors:
One responsible individual, per new business, shall complete 16 hours of business and law classes and pass a state examination covered by the class before an application can be submitted.
Contractors intending to perform public or private contracts must be licensed with the Construction Contractors Board.
Contractors who are employers must verify workers' compensation coverage. All contractors must carry liability insurance, from $100,000 to $500,000, depending on category.
General contractors must post a bond in the amount of $15,000. All specialty contractors and consultants must post a bond in the amount of $10,000, and limited contractors must post a bond in the amount of $5,000.
Lead Paint:
Inspects, risk accessors, suprervisors, project designers, workers, and firms engaged in lead-based paint activities must be certified. There are various education, training, and experience requirements, depending on the certification desired. Inspectors, risk assessors, and supervisors are required to take a qualifying exam administered by the Department of Human Services.
Plumbers and Electricians:
Applicants must pass a trade examination and provide experience documentation.
Asbestos:
Contractor applicants must submit an annual application and be registered with the Construction Contractors Board. All workers must be certified, either as an abatement supervisor or worker.
Other:
Public works contracts require a bid bond of 10% (cashier's or certified check) and a 100% performance bond.
